Chevrolet Camaro 1le with a ZL1 conversion

Half a century has gone by and Mercedes-AMG

Half a century has gone by and AMG, the performance arm of German luxury icon Mercedes-Benz, have continued to deliver some enthralling cars. Our fourth part of the feature takes a look at the beautiful SLS: a re-imagination of the glorious 300 SL, the AMG 45 line of four-cylinder powerhouses and Mercedes-AMG’s return to Formula 1. Some call it brutal. Some call it sharp. Others call it wild. Yet, some even called it cute. Behind that smiling face, under that long bonnet, and inside those gullwing doors was a monster waiting to be unleashed. The M156 V8, the 6,208-cc naturally-aspirated brute of a baritone motor, made headlines in the AMG ‘63’ line-up with between 457 and 525 PS. The M159, on the other hand, was dry-sumped and turned up to 571 PS in the SLS; the first car indigenously developed by AMG. With a weight of just 1,620 kg, it turned out to be a raw and engaging...

ROLLS-Royce Dawn Black Badge

Rolls has extracted an additional 30bhp from the 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 under the bonnet of the drop-top Dawn, bringing total power to 593bhp, although performance remains unchanged. The transmission, throttle and suspension have also been tweaked in a bid to differentiate the Dawn Black Badge, plus larger brakes are fitted. The Ghost Black Badge is available only in standard wheelbase, with the 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 uprated to 612 PS and 840 Nm. The Wraith Black Badge continues with 632 PS, but gets a bump up to 870 Nm. Both have been sufficiently tweaked, in the gearshift and handling departments, to increase driver engagement and provide a more involving motoring experience.

Mercedes GLS 63 4MATIC

Mercedes GLS 63 4MATIC The GLS 63 is a high-performance sport-luxury seven-seater that packs the M157 BiTurbo V8 that makes 585-PS. Paired with the seven-speed AMG SpeedShift unit with 4MATIC all-wheel drive, it delivers all of 760 Nm that peaks from merely 1,750 rpm all the way up to 5,250. The bellowing V8 delivers effortless athletic performance, making it the most potent GLS on offer Cars offer five Dynamic Select drive modes, AMG Ride Control, and a 40:60 split rear-biased power transfer, with the G 63 also packing three lockable differentials. Being on the ‘designo’ platform, both allow for a highly customizable interior.

MERCEDES-AMG G 63 ‘EDITION 463’

MERCEDES-AMG G 63 ‘EDITION 463’ The G 63 ‘Edition 463’. While the G 63 was on sale here earlier as well, it was the 544-PS version. Now, in line with the global update, the swansong G-Class ups its game with 571 PS and 760 Nm, from the same M157 5.5-litre BiTurbo V8. The AMG SpeedShift seven-speed unit continues doing duty with the advanced 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and makes short work of any terrain. Cars offer five Dynamic Select drive modes, AMG Ride Control, and a 40:60 split rear-biased power transfer, with the G 63 also packing three lockable differentials. Being on the ‘designo’ platform, both allow for a highly customizable interior.

JAGUAR F-TYPE SVR

JAGUAR F-TYPE SVR Built by the good people at their Special Vehicle Operations, the F-Type SVR looks just as stunning as the R but features a more potent mean-streak. While there are go-faster styling cues, it’s the uprated supercharged 5.0-litre V8 that really means business. It makes 575 PS and 700 Nm and, paired to an eight-speed automatic powering all the four wheels, can power on to over 300 km/h. Highly customisable, the F-Type SVR offers customers a choice of personalised settings and finer detail.

Ford GT

You can’t see it, but one of the GT’s unusual and welcomed functional features is an FIA-approved roll cage mounted within its cockpit structure, straight from the factory.
